‘I’m too busy right now.’ ‘I’m not ready yet.’ ‘I’ll just wait a little while,’ — sound familiar?
If you find yourself halting your dream pursuit with these common excuses, it’s time to take a tip or two from dreamer and founder of Fellow Flowers (Opens in a new tab), Mel Charbonneau.
“The permission to live a fully aligned life and become our best authentic self comes from within. Period,” says Mel.
Easier said than done though, right? Stepping out of our comfort zone and supporting ourselves through our dream pursuits isn’t easy.
“Our mindset controls our actions and our actions control our day-to-day,” says Mel. It’s time to let go of negative thoughts and start full-heartedly pursuing our passions!
But where to start? How do you let go of the ‘no’ and embrace the ‘yes’? As a successful dreamer who works with people pursuing their passions every day, Mel knows what it takes to make our goals come alive. Here are her tips on how to overcome excuses and achieve your greatest dreams.
Become willing. If you are truly willing to start your dream pursuit, “you have surrendered to the process. You can tell when someone is completely and 100% all into their passion…they have no idea what might come at them, but they do it anyway. The outcome doesn’t necessarily matter when you’re all in.”
Plan to be misunderstood. “When you are unapologetically stepping into something, be ready to own the fact that people are going to be like ‘what do you think you are doing?’ Just remember, it’s part of the game. The bigger your goal, the bigger your dream, the more people are going to look at you like you’re off your rocker. Be okay with it. You are always going to be too much for somebody, but as long as you are true to yourself, it simply doesn’t matter.”
Be magnetically authentic. “You know these people when you see them. They almost have this energy to them — they’re unapologetically themselves. Passion is radiating off of them. When you’re in your element, you become a beacon for people who are like you.” This, in turn, becomes a community of support to cheer you on along the way.
Learn to fear regret more than failure. “Successful dreamers know that everything is uncertain, but they’re doing it anyway. If you must be afraid of something as you go after your dreams, fear regret. You’ll never know what you can achieve if you don’t try — and I bet it’s more than you think!”
Be yourself. “Being completely willing to be your true, authentic self usually means you’re dropping a long-held shield. There is something that you have to let go of in order to move forward. Being seen for who you are is the toughest work you’ll ever do, but the people who are in your life that truly matter will be there when you drop that shield, no matter what.”
Learn to lift and receive. “Smart dreamers are not interested in pushing other people down. They are your cheerleaders, they are your support system. These people want you to succeed and they accept your support in return.” Being a good person — to yourself and others — plays a huge role in any success.
Encourage yourself to take on these characteristics and there’s no limit to what you’ll be able to achieve in life! It’s time to write your own permission slip.
“You are a story worth telling,” says Mel. “You are a person worth knowing. You are a life worth living. Now give yourself permission to not just dream it, but to do it.”
